Interestingly, on my solo bicycle travels around Spain I have noticed that in just about every bar anywhere in Castilla La Mancha they all do the freebie tapas with drinks, inc Leon. It was the norm, even in small villages in the mountains. Madrid is the bastion of the free tapa IMHO. One trip I was heading from Madrid to Valencia, enjoying free Castilla La Manchan tapas with drinks along the way. At the border of Castilla La Mancha and Communidad Valencia I hit a town called Utiel. Officially in Valencia and NO free tapas any longer! And there after. Trying to get a free tapa with drink anywhere else in Spain is a rarity, but has happened to me in small towns in far flung places, esp at lunchtimes. I have a gatranomic breakdown of Madrid if you fancy taking a read of it. Not sure if it's fir for this blog but give me a shout if you fancy.
